Healthy Tips

Recently, my husband and I hosted a wonderful engagement party at our home for our son and his girlfriend who will be married in the fall. My house was filled with out of town family who stayed for the weekend.

My normal routine and eating habits were put on hold from Thursday to Monday!

Can anyone relate to “I haven’t exercised in days and I have eaten my way through the weekend” feeling? Well, that was me a few weeks ago, let me tell you! I thoroughly enjoyed my family, the party was a huge success AND I was completely satisfied!

Enjoy the Moment

Step Lightly In To the New Year!

Posted by on Tue, Dec 13, 2011

How many parties or holiday events are you attending this season?

Do you have a plan for what to do when you are faced with a plethora of sweet treats and drinks?

In the spirit of good health habits, here are some tips on navigating the holidays so you enter the new year without the guilt (and extra weight).

Parties and Events

-  Plan to ask for water first thing - there are so many ways in which we dehydrate ourselves from soda to alcohol, so water is an excellent way to start the evening.

-  Eat a small snack before you go out to a party or event to prevent over indulging (and make sure you have these healthy snacks at home). Avocado, thin slices of turkey or chicken, and nuts are good choices.

Holistic Nutrition: How to Break Free of Sugar Addiction

Posted by on Wed, Apr 20, 2011

Nowadays it seems everyone has a “sweet tooth” but for some the desire to consume sugar is anything but an innocent or occasional craving.

For some, the need for sugar morphs into an unwavering compulsion and could be considered an actually biological addiction.  Before you continue to read any further, check and see if this sounds like you:

•  Have tried over and over again to cut out sugar from your diet, or at least decrease it, and no matter how hard you have tried, you end up giving in to your cravings and wind up feeling like you are a failure?

•  Does it ever feel like there’s absolutely nothing you can do to overcome the cravings and you know you’ll ‘give in’ no matter how much you’ve told yourself you wouldn’t?

•  Would it feel like a million-ton weight was lifted from your shoulders if you learned it’s not your fault that your craving sugar and it’s not a lack of willpower that’s driving you to eat anything sugary you can get your hands on?

In cases like these, it’s important to understand that a biological addiction to sugar/or carbohydrates CAN exist.  More importantly, recognizing that your inability to refrain from eating it is likely not your fault.  If you’ve been simply trying to employ good old-fashioned “willpower” to overcome your addiction, please know that this strategy simply will not work in almost all cases.  The biological needs of your body will ‘win-out’ over willpower each time.

Holistic Nutrition, how to stop sugar cravings: 3 MUST DO steps

Posted by on Mon, Jul 26, 2010

Oftentimes, when I have clients that are looking for strategies to stop sugar cravings, I realize that they’re looking for some “magical tip or trick”.  They want to hear that some fascinating new berry was discovered deep in the Amazon rain forest that promises to stop sugar cravings the instant it’s ingested.

In their mind, the sugar cravings become the enemy and they’re looking for the silver bullet that will strike those pesky cravings dead in their tracks.

But allow me for a moment to attempt to shift your perception.

What if those annoying cravings were actually a GOOD thing?

What if they were sent as messengers?  (No, not messengers telling you to pig-out on donuts, but messengers to let you know your body needs something in order to be healthy, lose those extra pounds, and rev up your energy.)

What if, instead of sabotaging your health and weight loss efforts, they were sent to enhance your efforts to get fit and slim down?
