The Truth About Addiction: Drug and Alcohol Addiction is NOT Caused by Drugs and Alcohol

Posted by on Tue, Sep 19, 2017

President Donald Trump[1] has just proclaimed September 2017 as the National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  One can’t fault any concerned American for bemoaning our #1 national epidemic that continues to escalate with no solution in sight.  In true Trumpesque form, the issue is being met head on and brazenly confronted, a welcomed call to action.

Deaths from drug abuse kill more Americans by far than any other disorder, with tobacco alone killing nearly a half million Americans per year and underlying much of the death and disability of the classical #1 and #2 killers, heart disease and cancer.  Deaths from opioid abuse alone, heavily fueled by the prescription pad, now tally more than the deaths from auto accidents and gunshot wounds combined.

Why can’t addictions be solved like many other medical problems; find the cause, address them, and be done with it?

Functional Medicine Treatments to Diagnose, Prevent and Reverse Osteoporosis Naturally

Posted by on Tue, Sep 12, 2017

Osteoporosis is a common disease that affects bone health. Osteoporosis and low bone density affect about half of all adults age 50 and over, and places them at greater risk for broken bones from minor falls.

However, most older Americans who suffer bone breaks are not tested or treated for osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis: Functional Medicine Testing for a Baseline on Your Bones

If you are slender in body build, have a family history of osteoporosis, are over 65 or have suffered unexplained bone fractures, you should have a DEXA scan.  If that test suggests significant loss of bone density, 3 additional diagnostic tests are commonly recommended by functional medicine practitioners: seriel blood progesterone [1] levels, serial urine N-Telopeptide Cross-links (NTx)[2] and seriel Hormonal Health[3]

How to Find Out About Your Genetic Risks

Posted by on Mon, Aug 14, 2017

A human being’s genetic blueprint is housed in our 23 chromosomes which is where the name of the genetic test “23andMe” gets its name.

Each of our 23 chromosomes has an average of about 1000 genes, and each gene has an average of about 100 quirky substitutions, which are sometimes referred to as mutations or polymorphisms.

These millions of quirky substitutions partly explains why we are all so delightfully unique in the way we look, think, act and feel about life’s challenges. Most of these mutations or polymorphisms are not considered to be detrimental, but a handful could be important under certain circumstances and cause serious diseases and other health problems, which is why it is important to know about them.

These important genetic polymorphisms are also:

New Hope for Dementia

Posted by on Mon, May 02, 2016

Dementia is a broad category of brain diseases associated with long term, irreversible, gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember which is great enough to affect a person's daily functioning and which is worse than would be expected with normal aging.

For decades, scientists have studied brain tissue samples of Alzheimer’s Disease victims, the largest dementia subcategory, (>50%), and have found distinctive pathological changes in the brain such as “plaque” and “neurofibrillary tangles” that are thought to somehow be causative of the disease.  The new sciences of Omics sheds new light on Dementia and is challenging long held views about its causes and treatments.

Methylation Webinar: The Road to Wellness Requires Understanding Methylation

Posted by on Mon, Jul 28, 2014

Free Methylation Webinar:

Understanding MTHFR, Methylation and Inflammation

Date: Tuesday, July 29, 2014
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM (Eastern Time) 5PM Pacific
Location: on-line webinar
Presenter: Chas Gant MD, PhD

"How the Perfect Storm of Methylation Defects, Oxidative Stress
and Inflammation Predisposes You to Chronic Medical & Psychiatric Disorders"

Many immunological, hormonal, structural, energetic, metabolic, nutritional, toxicological, infectious and genetic stressors conspire to exacerbate fight/flight, degenerative, sympathetic dysautonomia, the root cause of chronic medical and psychiatric disorders.

This first of three webinars will introduce practitioners to practical applications of functional medicine and nutrigenomics to mitigate fight/flight, degenerative, sympathetic dysautonomia, and thus help to address the root cause of chronic medical and psychiatric disorders.

Future webinars (August 12 & 26) hosted by the Academy of Functional
Medicine & Genomics will introduce specific technologies to overcome
methylation defects, decrease glutathione demands through lessening
inflammation and oxidative stress from toxins (e.g., mercury) and
chronic infections (e.g., Lyme and candida), and the use of precursor
loading and mindfulness-based psychotherapeutic techniques to activate
prefrontal cortex activity to further diminish fight/flight, degenerative,
sympathetic dysautonomia.

Space is limited.

The Primary Cause of Constipation

Posted by on Mon, Feb 20, 2012

Chas Gant MD, PhD

I appreciated the article Got Constipation?  by Debra Graugnard, a Certified Colon Hydrotherapist at NIHA, and I plan to photocopy it and provide the copy to all of my patients who suffer from constipation.  Constipation as a symptom is not taken seriously by many healthcare practitioners, including me at various times in my career, which is in my opinion constitutes negligence.  Constipation is a serious and deadly symptom and should be aggressively cured.

I have some good news to add to these nice suggestions about managing constipation in the article Got Constipation? by Debra Graugnard - the actual, primary cause of chronic constipation has been discovered. Anytime in history when the causal factor is discovered for a symptom or a disorder, clinicians have been able to zero in on the cause and be more effective in achieving positive outcomes.  Knowing the primary cause of chronic constipation helps us understand why colon hydrotherapy is so effective.  Knowing the cause also should help clinicians and patients alike take this symptom very seriously.

Hope for Sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis: Reversing the Risk Factors

Posted by on Fri, Jan 13, 2012

Chas Gant  MD, PhD

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, severe, usually progressive, autoimmune, demyelinating, mildly inheritable disease of the central nervous system which many studies suggest is rapidly increasing in prevalence and incidence[1]. The earliest symptoms of MS include psychological distress, fatigue, numbness, impaired vision, loss of balance, weakness and even bladder dysfunction, and they usually begin in early adulthood. With conventional management of MS, these symptoms can wax and wane for up to 30 years, but in roughly 50% of all cases MS steadily progresses to severe disability and premature death killing about 3,000 Americans a year.  MS is named for the many scars it produces in the brain and spinal cord as white blood cells (T cells) attack the myelin insulation around neurons.  MS afflicts between 250,000 and 350,000 Americans per year.

Functional Medicine: A Distinctly Different Kind of Medicine

Posted by on Mon, Jan 24, 2011

by Chas Gant MD, PhD

Functional Medicine, which is neither Conventional nor Alternative Medicine

I have practiced functional medicine since it was invented over 30 years ago and during these decades I have reluctantly tolerated and overlooked being mislabeled as an “alternative medicine[1]” doctor.  Healthcare consumers and practitioners alike often fail to recognize that functional medicine has virtually nothing to do with alternative medicine practices such as homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine or hands-on-healing. Functional medicine is also not conventional medicine.  Functional medicine is a third and completely different discipline.  Functional medicine’s uniqueness stems from its heavy reliance on certain basic sciences - toxicology, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy and genetics - which in widely varying degrees are part of the educational curricula of all licensed healthcare professionals. These basic sciences are also referred to as “pure sciences” because they conform more rigorously to scientific method.

Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.  Once a hypothesis has been proven, it can provide a predictable model which can then be used to formulate further hypotheses and experimentation.
