Finally! Better Choices in Personal Care Products

Posted by on Tue, Aug 28, 2012

Have you heard the welcome news?

Last week Johnson & Johnson reiterated it’s pledge to slowly phase out the toxic ingredients used in their baby product line by the end of 2013 and announced that it will also reformulate their adult personal care products which include Lubriderm, Aveeno and Neutrogena products, by 2015.

A large coalition of health and environmental groups, called The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics started calling for the removal of several dangerous and possibly carcinogenic chemicals from personal care products in 2009. Formaldehyde, 1,4 dioxan, triclosan, phthalates and parabens are just a few of the “chemicals of concern” according to the Environmental Working Group who is part of that coalition. Their website, www.ewg.org/skindeep contains a database of 75,000 personal care products that they have rated from 0-10 for toxicity levels.

The FDA does not test personal care products for safety - they rely on the individual companies to do that.

Personal care products fall under the “cosmetics” label, which includes deodorant, lotions, make-up, oral hygiene products and more.

The reason why it is not working is because most people, and even health practitioners, don’t understand where carpal tunnel comes from.  All people know is that their wrist hurts or their hands are going numb and they want it fixed because it greatly affects their lives.

Do you suffer from fatigue, cramping, nausea, migraines, anger, irritability, restlessness, mood swings, digestive disturbance, hot flashes and just plain feeling down in the dumps?  Do these symptoms seem to occur regularly or cyclically?

Sweetened or Unsweetened? Do You Want Diabetes With That?

Healthy Tips

Dr. Mark Hyman has coined the term “diabesity”. It refers to the journey from a normal blood sugar level to pre-diabetes and finally to full blown Type II diabetes, often accompanied by obesity.

Sugar, Sugar, Sugar

Refined foods, sugary drinks and fast foods all turn to sugar very quickly in the body. After a high carbohydrate meal or snack, insulin is secreted by the pancreas so that the sugar can be transported from the blood into the cells where it can be used for energy. An abundance of sugar in the system (aka a normal American diet) causes a lot of insulin to be produced. Over time the cells no longer respond to the insulin and the body needs more of it to keep blood sugar in balance. This is called insulin resistance.

The brain, the liver and the muscles are the primary users of sugar or glucose. After that, all the excess gets stored as fat!  A common side effect of insulin resistance is weight gain.

Lyme Disease May be Worse Than Ever This Year

Posted by on Sat, May 05, 2012

The NIHA doctors are already seeing a lot of tick bites and Lyme disease due to the mild winter, early spring and other indicators of a large tick population in 2012.

The Washington Post ran an article this week in which Dr. Paul Beals is quoted:

*Excerpted from the The Washington Post:
Paul Beals,  a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating Lyme disease at National Integrated Health Associates in the District, says, "We're finding that the vast majority of our patients who are getting tick bites causing Lyme are also getting other co-infections at the same time," including such febrile illnesses as bartonella, which can be transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes, as well as babesiosis and ehrlichiosis.
