Holistic Nutrition: How eating baby carrots can destroy your diet

If you're like me, you're probably thinking, "OH COME ON! Carrots have got to be one of the healthiest foods around! How could they be destroying my efforts to lose weight?" I know this is what I was thinking before I learned the truth.

Please be warned: what you don't know could be killing any chances of successfully losing the weight and keeping it off permanently. All without you ever knowing! It's no wonder why you try so hard, and face frustration because you never achieve the results you want: a slim, trim, sexy, healthy body. It's like "invisible forces" are working against you.

It is time to shed some light on hidden "fat factors"...

If you've attended our nutrition program or weight loss classes, or heard Lisa and me talk before, you ought to know one of our core principles by heart and that is:

"It's not about the food, it's what we've DONE to the food!"

This is the case with baby carrots. Carrots ARE one the best foods you can eat, but here's a really important question for you.... Do you know where "baby carrots" come from? Guess what? They sure don't come out of the ground looking the way they do when you get them in the neat little zipper-locked baggies you find in the grocery store.

What happens is that during the harvesting, a number of the full-sized carrots that get pulled from the ground break in the process, or they may be deformed, or "runts" (not big enough).

The producers know that they can't sell you a bag full of half broken vegetables, or ones that look deformed or too stubby. Instead of wasting these, they simply find a way to "pretty them up" and sell them to you differently.

Hence, the birth of the baby carrot. These broken or deformed carrots get shaved down to the cute little pieces we're used to snacking on. Did you ever wonder why they look so perfect? They didn't grow that way.

Unfortunately, because we're now dealing with massive industrialized food production, harmful bacteria can enter the scene. In order to "protect" us from this potentially pathogenic bacteria, the food manufacturers will soak these little guys in BLEACH.

Yes you read that correctly: THEY SOAK THE BABY CARROTS IN BLEACH.

The reason this can lead to sabotaging your weight loss efforts is many. First, bleach is not something that is natural to the body. The body views it as toxic waste that needs to be immediately DETOXIFIED from your system.

Here's why this is so bad for weight loss:

You're probably working hard to get your metabolism in high gear so you have the energy to burn fat and lose weight. What's happening though is that your body will redirect the energy AWAY from fat burning and point it toward the goal of getting the chemicals out of your system!

No fair, right?

Isn't it maddening to know that a food you're eating is actually creating more work for your body, so it can't focus on the job you want it to do: SHED THE POUNDS!

But here's where it gets worse: If your body can't detox all the chemicals you're ingesting, it feels the need to protect your vital organs from them. To create this protection, it will take the chemicals and STUFF them into your fat cells!

That's right.... this food you've been eating, thinking it will help you lose weight can actually contribute to your FAT GAIN.

So, here's what you need to do right now to avoid destroying your weight loss efforts...

ACTION STEPS:

1.) Remember our core principle, "It's not about the food, it's what we've done to the food!" The carrot is not the enemy! It's the mass produced "food production" we need to steer clear of. Chemicals in processed foods (preservatives, pesticides etc.) may slow our metabolism and sabotage weight loss.

2.) When you go to the store, reach for the bag of FULL sized, organic carrots. All you need to do is scrub them off and chop them up! You'll find that they taste better and are usually sweeter than their bleach-soaked "baby" relatives.

3.) To hear more great tips and get some answers to your weight loss questions join Lisa Wilson and me next Thursday, December 10th for a FREE teleconference: "Why Diets Don't Work!" Click here for more details....

4.) Don't think you need to "go it alone".Starting in January 2010 we'll start a new class of our acclaimed WEIGHT LOSS FOR TIRED PEOPLE PROGRAM. Stay tuned for details! We'll be giving you a TON of extra tips between now and the new year, and let you know how you can get onboard with our LIFE-CHANGING PROGRAM FOR FREE!

I did not know this about baby carrots. I actually feel somewhat lied to and disappointed.

This encourages me to learn more about the foods that I am choosing to buy at certain stores. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just grow our own food!

A great book that I am just about finished with is, Janice Stanger's book, "The Perfect Formula Diet."

This book also busts nutrition and health myths. I've also learned how to balance my food so that I take in the most nutrients as possible.

But baby carrots DO taste very sweet. After I began eating baby carrots medical testing showed the presence of lactose, when I hadn't ingested any. Do they also soak them in lactose in order to cover up the flavor of bleach? I also wondered how they be so sweet and moist and stay so long in plastic bags without molding. Now I know. Many people, including sick autistic children are quite allergic to lactose. Not including something about that on the label is disasterous for them.

The movie on DVD "FOOD INC" is a must see! Unless you eat organic soybean products you are ingesting soybeans sprayed by the weed killer Roundup thanks to the Monsanto Company.
Food in USA is about big company production profits, not healthy.

Food chemists devised ways to use all the corn grown with subsidies.
Now we have an addictive, sweeter than sugar, additive in so many many of our foods that didn't used to have sugar. Obesity really jumped in the 80s because of corn syrup products entering our foods.

It is said, "What you don't know won't hurt you," but as we can see with the baby carrots they can kill you.

Thanks for the info. and away with the baby carrots.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Eve and Lisa's class at NIHA. We are just about to have the last class before Christmas and I have learned a huge amount about delicious and nutritious foods that ARE GOOD FOR ME and taste great. Lisa and Eve are role models for everybody. I can’t wait to sign up for the advanced class.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! The long and the short of it is that there are many, many things that have long been regarded as "generally safe" that have been added to our food. It's truly up to us to determine where we draw the line and what "additives" are acceptable to us, despite what we've been told. For me, I don't care to have ANY amount of chlorine in my food or water. This is precisely why I filter my tap water. Thanks for letting me share some other these tips with you! Please be sure to visit my website, http://www.WeightLossForTiredPeople.com for more tips and tools to get you looking and feeling you best! Warmly,

I found this article saying that chlorine is an approved post-harvest treatment process for organic veggies in order to control microbial growth. http://www.extension.org/article/18355

But I also found an article that debunks the danger of chlorine in baby carrots.
http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/fooddrink/a/baby_carrots.htm

Chlorine volatilizes when exposed to air, so even if you don't like the chlorine taste in your drinking water, if you let it sit out in a container overnight, bingo - taste gone. Now if the chlorine was strong enough to harm you, it would also harm the carrot, because it destroys organic matter. If you're worried about your carrots, soak them in fresh water and then eat them. In my opinion, the lack of fiber in the American diet is FAR more harmful than "toxins". There is no magic bullet. Eat a(n organic when possible) balanced diet that makes you feel good.

Sadly, the stress created by these kinds of alarmist theories probably contribute more to fat retention in the body than the chemicals from a baby carrot. If you have published studies supporting this assertion, you owe it to your readers to provide them, so they can think for themselves.
Posted @ Thursday, December 17, 2009 9:38 PM by High Stress is the Cause of Weight Gain, Not Carrots
The article that you reference that "debunks" the harmful effects of chlorine in baby carrot production, does not, in fact, debunk anything. Just because a professor (Dr. Joe Schwarcz) makes a statement, does NOT make that statement a fact.

I, too, believe in using established research upon which to base health claims. So, here is some interesting research that supports the ill-effects of chlorine on vegetables.

The following article provides an overview of the carcinogenic compounds created when chlorine interacts with organic matter. While the author attempts to downplay this negative aspect of chlorination, her justification for it is not good enough for me. In essence, she is implying that since chlorination prevented certain diseases a long time ago, we should not worry about the negative health effects. I disagree. Cancer is also a serious disease (and it is more common now, than ever before).

http://www.cfour.org/cms/index.php?id=31

* Also, while it is true that chlorine evaporates readily at room temperature, that fact is irrelevant. When vegetables are chlorinated, chemical reactions occur that do not just go away.

In case there is interest, here is the correlation between chlorinated baby carrots and weight gain.

1. The chlorination of vegetables creates a particularly potent class of carcinogens. (http://www.cfour.org/cms/index.php?id=31)

2. The immune system is at least aware of cancerous condiditons within the body, and typically forms some sort of response. (http://www.the-scientist.com/article/display/56084/)

3. The adrenal glands are necessarily active during immune responses. (http://www.umm.edu/endocrin/adrengl.htm)

4. Under sustained response conditions, the adrenal can become fatigued (nutritionally). This state introduces an additional vector for cancerous conditions (via DNA methylation) and it inhibits the proper assimilation of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_262/ai_n13675760/)

5. In many cases, the cascading effects of these conditions results in weight gain.

I think the point of Eve's post was to point out that chlorinated vegetables *contribute* to weight gain, and it looks like the available research corroborates this assertion.

I find the carrot argument sperious. There are two major producers of baby carrots...Grimmway Farms and Bolthouse farms. You can read Bolthouse farms statement regarding their chlorination treatment of carrots here:http://truthaboutbabycarrots.com/
They do not soak their carrots in chlorine. They wash them in a solution that has less chlorine than is in tap water. So if you are making the argument that chlorinated carrots are causing weight gain, you had better start advising people to stop drinking tap water, and for that matter swimming in pools that are loaded with chlorine. If foods were not cleaned you would have a far worse problem of being getting ill from food borne illness. To my point, Bolthouse obviously doesn't use enough chlorine to kill all pathogens because people have contracted illnesses from their juices:http://www.pritzkerlaw.com/botulism-carrot-juice/ I do not like cleansers in my food and would never buy a baby carrot that has been machined. I will always wash all produce several times and peel all foods grown under soil. That being said your statement about baby carrots is following to closely to over-blown internet hype. If people are gaining weight from eating baby carrots it is more likely that it comes from eating them by the bagful in one sitting, and their high sugar content.

Certified organic baby carrots cannot be "soaked in bleach" under the USDA organic regulations.

They can be washed in water but the "residual chlorine levels in the water shall not exceed the maximum residual disinfectant limit under the Safe Drinking Water Act." Sec. 205.601 of the USDA organic regulations.

If there is any legitimate support for the claim that either organic or conventional baby carrots are "soaked in bleach," I would appreciate seeing the references. The nutrition team, naturopaths and medical doctors at NIHA should be able to back up the information coming from their office or correct it if necessary.

Thank you all so much for your comments and a very spirited debate!

We are living in fascinating times where the power and reach of the internet can provide us with all sorts of information at our fingertips. Sadly, all the
information available is not always accurate and can be very misleading.

I see that a few of the comments above, that have been opposed to my position, have sited sources that present a different assessment than my sources.

In fairness to you, my reader, I would like to quickly recap why I believe this is an issue we should all be concerned about and then allow you to view my sources so you can make a decision for what is best for your health and the health of your family.

Chlorine IS used in the production of baby carrots. The following link will provide you with the patent information regarding the process:

http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5346712/description.html

The problem with adding this is the byproducts produced when chlorine comes in contact with organic matter. Specifically trihalomenthanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs)
not to mention the scary sounding "Mutagen X."

In short, I believe that we are now living in a world where we are constantly being BOMBARDED with toxic materials. These toxic materials can build up in our systems and contribute to major illnesses, like birth defects, miscarriages and cancer, not to mention weight gain.

When our bodies are assigned the task of removing toxic build up, less energy can be devoted
to things like fat burning and weight management.

There are many views that something as simple as chlorine (which is widely used to kill bacteria in our water supply) could hardly be contributing to this issue. One comment above stated specifically that if I'm concerned about the amount of chlorine use in vegetable production, I should also be concerned about my water.

I absolutely agree. Not only do I dislike chemicals like chlorine in my food, but I also make a point to
buy chlorine-free cleaning products, paper products, and I ABSOLUTELY filter water. (*READERS WHO ARE NEW TO NATURAL HEALTH PLEASE SEE MY NOTE AT THE BOTTOM)

The highly regarded Washington DC based organization, The Environmental Working Group, has over 200 articles on chlorine alone. Please visit them here:www.ewg.org and do a search on "chlorine" to get a comprenhensive
view of why it is important to get this chemical out of our food and water supply.

Beyond that, I'm proud to say that I am a graduate from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the world's largest nutrition school. While in attendance, I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Joseph Mercola. He is a wealth of information and has specifically spoken out on this issue as well. Please see his articles below:

You will find over 200 articles on this issue and a number specifically related to the water situation in DC.

(NOTE FOR THOSE NEW TO NATURAL HEALTH: It can seem daunting at first trying to switch to organic, trying to clean up your water, trying to get the chemicals out of your home, etc. Do not despair! It is possible to change a lifetime of bad habits of choices that no longer support us. One of the key elements though is taking BABY STEPS! You can't expect to change a lifetime of habits over night and will set yourself up to fail if you do. This one of the reasons I head an online coaching program, because most of us need to take small steps, and do one thing at a time and get the guidance they need in the process. Thanks for all the input and happy holidays to everyone!

Eve,

Thank you for responding to our emails. I am also concerned about the amount of chlorine in our water and environment.

The link you cited on Dr. Mecola's website was very helpful, and it explained that organic baby carrots are processed without chlorine or bleach:

"Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen. Organic growers instead use a citrus based, nontoxic solution called Citrox."
