"The whole is more than the sum of its parts" -Aristotle

functionaltestingimage

Think of your body as a grand orchestra assembled to play an elaborate symphony together...each system is a different instrument. While we recognize many individual "players" in the body, they all function as a whole.

If any of YOUR "players" are out of tune or marching to a different beat, YOU may be suffering.

Have you been working on your health for a long time and still feel that something is still missing?

We invite you to take a look at your own internal orchestra with Dr. Gant's Functional Medicine and Fuctional Testing program. Functional medicine is patient-centered medicine that examines how the systems of the body are functioning, or working properly. Functional medicine searches for the underlying imbalance which can contribute to illness or chronic disease. If one of the musicians is out of tune, it will affect the whole orchestra. Similarly, if YOU have an imbalance, it can affect your whole body in ways that you may not even know.

It's time to get your body balanced. Here's how:

Diagnostic Functional Testing to Identify and Correct Imbalances

Dr. Gant's model of Functional Medicine involves special diagnostic testing, often covered by insurance, to identify and correct imbalances in the brain and body chemistry.

These lab tests may uncover:

* Nutritional Deficiencies

* Hormonal Imbalances

* Detoxification and Biotransformational imbalances

* Immune imbalances

* Inflammatory imbalances

* Digestive,absorptive, and microbiological imbalances

* Structural imbalances

Imbalances such as these may be early symptoms of disease or barriers to good health.

Expert Interpretation of Functional Test Results

Dr. Gant has 30 years experience in interpreting these complex tests. Based on his findings, he creates a plan for each patient to correct their imbalances and restore fundamental health.

If you are searching for a health coach, a "conductor" bring your internal orchestra to restored health, please schedule your appointment now with Dr. Gant.

An Integrative Medicine Approach to Headaches

Many people who suffer from headaches search for a way to prevent them, as well as, treat them in a way that involves less down time, less medication, and less expense. There is no doubt that there are some great medications out there for treating the different kinds of headaches.  Muscle tension headaches respond well to NSAIDS and muscle relaxants, migraines respond well to the triptan medications.  However, most medications do just that- treat the headache once it is there.  There are some medications that are preventative but require daily dosing which can be expensive and increase the possibility of side effects.  What types of complementary or alternative methods might there be to prevent headaches?  We cannot answer that question until we know what causes headache pain.

What are some of the common muscle tension or stress headache triggers?

  • Lack of sleep, poor sleep, poor sleep conditions
  • Head or neck injury
  • Repetitive stress such as sitting at the computer all day
  • Emotional stress
  • Tension or strain of neck, scalp, face, jaw
  • Eye strain

How can headaches be prevented?

  • Get enough refreshing sleep
  • 7-8 hours minimum
    • Comfortable, supportive, clean sleep surface
    • Comfortable room temperature
    • No EMF’s- turn off the TV, Cell phone, wireless network, computer
    • No stimulants before bed, no caffeine or sugar
    • Minimize fluids depending on your own bladder habits
    • No showers- water hitting the skin is stimulating, take a warm bath instead
  • Exercise daily and this means more than just walking the dog. If you are unsure of how to exercise properly and safely ask a professional trainer.
  • Three components are necessary for exercise: Flexibility- stretch,  Strength- resistance training (usually with weights), and Endurance – cardiovascular or aerobic
  • Daily meditations or centering: Prayer, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Yoga, Sitting Meditation

If you use the above techniques and still suffer regularly from muscle tension headaches you should have another work-up to rule out more serious problems.  If the work up has already shown nothing more, make an appointment to discuss a personalized integrative medicine approach to headache treatment and prevention.  The above lists are, by no means, comprehensive.  I didn’t even touch on the dietary influences.  More to come.

Holistic health practitioner attends Integrative Medicine conference

I recently attended the American College for the Advancement of Medicine, known as ACAM, Spring 2010 Education Summit in San Diego. Integrative Physicians and holistic health care practitioners from around the world convened for five days of cutting-edge education from the brightest minds in integrative medicine. "Frontiers of Integrative Medicine" was the General session theme this year. The pre-conference workshops on heavy metal detoxification, Lyme Disease, nutrition and hyperbaric oxygen therapy took place over the first two days of the conference. The heavy metal detoxification course filled every seat and boasted a number of speakers over its two day span. For patients it is  important to make sure the your health care provider has attended ACAM's chelation therapy workshop; its the only one of its kind where protocols, safety and standards are taught. While many providers do chelation and detox therapies unless they've attended this important workshop they may not be up on current protocols. I've heard too many stories from patients who became ill or had a bad experience from chelation and in many of these cases the ACAM guide lines where not followed.

The other two day workshop was the Lyme Disease workshop which also featured a plethora of speakers including Joseph Burrascano, MD, one of the world's leading experts on diagnosing and treating Lyme Disease and associated tick-borne diseases. This was of special interest to me because NIHA uses a holistic, integrative approach to treat many Lyme Disease patients. I have to admit my favorite speaker of the Lyme workshop was Ann Corson, MD and her information on the use of German Biological Medicine in the treatment of tick borne diseases.

German Biological Medicine (GBM) grew out of the science of Homeopathy and artfully combines the use of herbal, homeopathic and immunometabolic immune-modulating medicines in a terrain-based system of medicine with current scientific research into human physiology and biochemistry. The homotoxicology model of disease proposed by Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg is based directly on the classic Chinese medical text Shang Han Lun or Treatise on Diseases Caused by Cold written by Jiang Zhongjing at the end of the Han Dynasty around 220 AD. Ann Corson, MD, had many great clinical pearls for us.

The Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation sponsored the nutrition workshop with David Getoff, CCN, CTN, FAAIM, speaking about traditional diets, the myths surrounding vegetarianism and veganism and other nutritional topics.

The final pre-conference workshop focused on hyperbaric oxygen therapy and took place on Thursday. The course featured Dan Rossignol, MD, Kyle Van Dyke, MD, David Dornfeld, DO and Shannon Kenitz and explored hyperbaric oxygen therapy for neurological conditions.
In addition to the education, we had healthy snacks and lunch was provided with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. On Thursday, for the second time, ACAM offered the Certified Chelation Therapy Exam, and continues to be the only organization to offer such an exam. These jam-packed two days of education included a modest exhibit hall and served as the perfect precursor for the larger general session that weekend. ACAM has workshops twice a year and in my opinion ACAM workshops are one of the best sources of continuing education for Integrative Medicine healthcare providers and I try to never miss them.

plastic_Chemicals commonly found in cosmetics, shampoos and lotions, have been found to adversely affect the delicate hormonal balance of adolescent girls. Three classes of chemicals, phenols, phthalates and phytoestrogens can cause early puberty in young girls, potentially setting them up for more serious hormonally related diseases in the future. These chemicals, especially those detected at highest concentrations were shown to have a relationship between hormones, development, neurotransmitters mood and sleep disorders.

In a recent study published in Environmental Health Perspectives researchers investigated the association of concurrent exposures from three chemical classes (phenols, phthalates, and phytoestrogens) which are commonly found in lotions, cosmetics and shampoo.
Add that to the plastics we have surrounded ourselves with from water bottles to food storage and it is no wonder we see such changes.

Several research studies have found that when plastic comes in contact with certain foods, molecules of the chemicals in the plastic can leach into the food or beverage including water. Certain characteristics of the food item can make it more likely to pick up plastic molecules:

* The more liquid a food is, the more it touches the plastic, so the more opportunity it has to pick up plastic molecules.
* Acid foods, such as tomato sauce, appear to be particularly interactive with plastic.
* If you heat a food item in a plastic container even if the container is microwave-safe the transference of plastic from the container to the food is even more likely.

When molecules of plastic or actually molecules of the chemicals that get added to plastics during manufacturing get into our bodies, it's not a good thing. They can cause unwanted effects in the human body; for instance, some of the chemicals mimic estrogen. Estrogen, of course, is a normal, essential human hormone; but having too much of it (or the molecules that mimic estrogen) has been associated with breast cancer and other health problems. In general, chemicals that fool the body into thinking they are estrogen or other hormones are called endocrine disruptors and are best avoided.

Better food storage solutions... glass is the best choice, followed closely by porcelain, ceramic, and stainless steel.

Better personal care solutions... use fewer products that are fragrance free and dye free.

Learn how to read labels on products. The Environmental Working Group ewg.org, is an informational website with a cosmetics database.

integrativemap"How can an integrative practitioner help me to...?"

Each of our practitioners has navigated their own pathway of training and offers knowledge and skills that may give you more options for healing.

In my essay What Integrative Medicine Means to Me  I name some of the many options available at NIHA for assessing and treating a wide variety of health concerns. We practitioners often refer to the "map" of Five Levels of Health & Healing popularized by Dietrich Klinghardt, M.D., Ph.D.

Functional Assessments and more

At NIHA we can use various diagnostic methods such as laboratory tests, various types of imaging and other methods shown on the five level map. In my counseling I can help you look at your personal internal map of your life journey (including a timeline of shocks and traumas as well as your "Play History" of how you expressed your creativity). We look at where you've been, where you are now, and where you want to go.

To make progress in treating your health condition it helps to first think of these wise words, "It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has." -- Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.).

Whether you see yourself as being created by God or by the intricate process of millions of years of evolution, the natural laws are still the same. Western science through quantum physics has shown us that we are simultaneously substance and energy. See Cathy Scoblionko's blog: Holistic Health: What are we made of? I look at health management as the Mindful or prayerful stewardship of the precious gift of life that you possess.

The human being is designed to be creative and to enjoy life. That requires both the ability to engage in activities and in relationships with others and also to relax, replenish our energy stores and repair damages from the activities of daily living. Maintaining flexibility and creatively dealing with Change keeps us healthy. The reason that we need doctors and health care practitioners is that the body sometimes can't do it all. Extraordinary forces and events can overpower our innate healing system and leave physical and emotional scars that need outside help to remove.

Recent advances in neuroscience have shown how important it is for people to have supportive relationships with others and to be aware of their body's functions as they move forward in life. Dr. Stephen Porges  is highly regarded by Dr. Klinghardt and they describe the body's protective autonomic nervous system as also including a Social Engagement System. This explains the success of family systems therapy and Family Constellation events, which Dr. Klinghardt recommends for everyone. Applied Psycho-Neurobiology is provided by Scott Richards and Maureane O'Shaugnessey. The growing appreciation of Mindfulness as taught by Charles Gant, M.D. shows how important it is to listen to your body and to observe your emotions and thoughts.

In my therapeutic recommendations I may include therapeutic nutrition and supplements, the NES Infoceuticals, Integrative Homeopathy, Craniosacral Therapy, breathing exercises, Soma-Focus Hypnotherapy, physical exercise, acupoint stimulation without needles, or referral visits to other NIHA practitioners for biological dental care, in-depth food and lifestyle counseling, hyperbaric oxygen and much more.

Again the Five Levels of Health & Healing is a helpful guide and can be used as a menu for choosing treatments so that your individual integrative medicine health support program includes treatments on more than the physical level alone. Our assessments and treatments at NIHA can provide major assistance as you move forward in the healing process. However, the final work of healing is done by your own innate abilities to creatively manage your life.

The end result of our work with you is for you to know yourself more deeply and to take charge of your own Journey of Health.

With all the focus on health care this year we are starting to take a hard look at what kind of "health care" we are actually receiving from the medical community.

Are we healthier?  Do we feel better?  Are we healing?

Integrative medicine, as practiced at National Integrated Health Associates, NIHA, is health care that blends traditional western medicine with safe, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies in order to help the patient heal. Holistic and integrative doctors support and empower patients along their journey to optimum health and wellness.

These recent articles show that public awareness and interest in integrative medicine is on the rise:

1. CNN "How integrative medicine can help your health"

Duke Integrative Medicine is launching professional training in integrative-health coaching. "It's like a life coach, but for your health," says Gaudet. ...

2. "Integrative Medicine: Can This Help Solve America's Health Care Crisis?"

3. Natural News "90 Percent of Parents Want to Know More About Alternative Medicine, Survey Reveals"
Integrative medicine combines traditional Western medicine with medical therapies from other traditions, including acupuncture, massage and nutrition.

4. Andrew Weil, MD "The Advantages of Integrative Medicine"

Dr. Weil looks at the evidence for integrative vs. strictly conventional medicine.

5. ABCNEWS Video: Dr. David Servan-Schreiber discusses integrative medicine in preventing cancer.

6. Dr. Oz Supports Dr. Gerbarg Integrative health approach to Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease is complicated. Integrative health expert Patricia Gerbarg MD is cited by Dr. Mehmet Oz in the December 2009 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, for her approach to relieving post-Lyme disease symptoms with herbals, supplements and lifestyle changes.

Stress is defined as any mental or bodily tension resulting from factors which alter our equilibrium. Chronic stress can lead to distress,  often experienced as physical pain, fatigue, depression or dysfunctional behaviors. Chronic stress can lead to distress, which often causes or exacerbates medical or psychiatric disorders such as alcohol or substance abuse.

The 12 Kinds of Chronic Stress:
1) Emotional Stress (losses, post-traumatic)
2) Cognitive Stress (irrational demands)
3) Sensory Stress (chronic pain disorders)
4) Metabolic Stress (high/low blood sugar)
5) Toxic Stress (heavy metals, chlorine)
6) Immune Stress (autoimmune, allergy)
7) Infectious Stress (Lyme disease, candida, GI issues)
8) Purposelessness Stress (no spirituality)
9) Endocrine Stress (hormonal, PMS, aging)
10) Oxidative Stress (vein, arterial blockage)
11) Energetic Stress (electromagnetic, geopathic)
12) Neurotransmitter Stress (decreased serotonin)

The Mind/Body Wants to Heal
Our mind/body prefers to exist in a healing, regenerative rest/digest state, but will sacrifice that to deal with brief emergencies. The problem is we can spend so much time in chronic stress and distress due to our total stress load, that we spend insufficient time in the healing, parasympathetic, rest/digest mode so healing cannot occur. Chronic psychiatric and medical disorders can result, as well as accelerated aging and even premature death.

Chronic Stress is Reversible
Even after the total stress load has battered the mind/body it is still reversible. Getting to the root cause of stress by addressing all 12 types of chronic stress through proper diagnostic testing and professional assistance can bring your mind/body back to its preferred healthy condition, so authentic healing can occur.

For authentic healing to occur, this is the most important factor in addressing any chronic medical or psychiatric condition.

Charles Gant, MD, PhD, national lecturer, author and integrative medical doctor at National Integrated Health Associates, NIHA, an integrative medicine and dental center, is presenting a free 5 part Webinar Series on Depression, Anxiety, Burnout and Mood Disorders.

Integrative Medicine Treatment of Fungal Sinusitis

By Charles Gant MD

QUESTION: My wife has been suffering from recurring sinus
infections and it seems the cause is yeast. Can you suggest a remedy? The only thing we get from the doctors is another round of steroids and antibiotics which hasn't worked.

ANSWER: I love answering this question. Helping my patients cure chronic sinusitis is one of the most gratifying clinical experiences, because the treatment is so effective.

See the article in Science Daily entitled: Mayo Clinic Study Implicates Fungus As Cause Of Chronic Sinusitis . Ever since the reports emerged in the 90's that chronic sinusitis is caused by fungus, I have enjoyed seeing hundreds of patients get completely well via antifungal antibiotic treatment. The chronic fungal fluid is a perfect growth medium for an occasional bacterial infection, which is potentially much more serious and requires antibacterial antibiotics. Bacteria can move around freely and invade rapidly, whereas fungi are like little plants and attach their roots into tissues, so they are relatively stationary. But they are more difficult to eradicate once they are dug in.
At first we accomplished these stellar clinical results with typical oral antifungals used to treat fungal toenails and other chronic yeast infections, like Sporonox and Nizoral. But early in the last decade, the topical nasal lavage equipment (see: http://www.hydromedonline.com/ ) emerged, which allowed us to avoid completely the systemic potential problems of oral antifungals. So basically, patients need to buy this water-pic like device online, and then I prescribe amphotericin and nizoral from a compounder, who mails it to you as a liquid solution, which you then pulse a dose in each nostril (one at a time) - sounds gross, but who wants to live with infections and mycotoxins forever! - using it once a day at bedtime, when gravity helps distribute the antifungals as you lie down, and use it for 6 to 8 weeks.

Relapsing symptoms are rare, but if that happens just do another round, and that's it. The solution does not get appreciably absorbed when the antifungals are delivered this way, so the "first do no harm" edict is satisfied! Antifungals can be hard on the liver, so we have satisfied the three criteria for a great treatment.

Safety, efficacy and relatively inexpensive.

Eve Colantoni, CHC

If you're a patient at NIHA you've likely faced some hard times or even serious challenges with your health. You may have had other doctors shrug their shoulders, offer little help with your condition, or worse,  tell you "there's nothing wrong with you".
And although we treat patients with many different conditions like Lyme disease, autism, and ADHD to name a few, ALL of our patients have one thing in common and one major component that is INTEGRAL to their healing protocol...

The guiding principles of holistic, integrative medicine are based on a two part process:

PART ONE: Exploring and removing the deep underlying root causes of disease.

PART TWO: Tapping into the body's innate and powerful ability to encourage natural healing.

More simply put, no matter what condition you have (be it acne, autism, or ADHD) the one thing our patients have in common is the need to get rid of the bad stuff (the cause of disease) and bring in the good stuff (the elements for healing).

And here is where we start:

image_saladYou must give your body the most fundamental element to life and health:

NOURISHING FOOD!

You see, the foods we eat either fuel and enrich us, sparking our body's innate healing system or drain and obstruct our physical systems, damaging our bodies and life.
But most people are only aware of a small portion of the effects of our diet: weight gain or weight loss. They understand that if you eat the wrong foods you can get fat. But let me ask you this now-are you aware that the foods you are eating could be:

Triggering your depression?
Causing your migraine headaches?
Insighting your child's ADHD?
Feeding your Lyme Disease?
Energizing your cancer cells?
Aiding in your addiction to illegal drugs?
Nourishing yeasts, molds, and fungus?
Stripping your energy?
Tripling your fatigue?
Intensifying your allergies?
and I could go on and on.....

But it doesn't have to be this way! In fact, food is not the enemy! Providing the body with nourishing food is actually the cornerstone to the healing process. Before we had pharmaceutical drugs, it was food we turned to when there was a need for healing.

It was Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, who is credited with saying,
"Let food be your MEDICINE and medicine be your FOOD"

Regardless of the condition you may have, you must remember that your healing is dependent on how well your body is nourished.

But these days, it might feel like you need a PhD in nutrition and biochemistry to figure it all out. Especially after all the misinformation that been promoted by food manufactures, diet book gurus, even our government! (Remember in the '80's when ketchup and french fries counted as vegetables for our school children?)

And even if you THINK you're eating a healthful diet, chances are you've gotten tripped up without even realizing it...

But there is hope! We are dedicated to providing you with the information and services you need to get better faster and to live the healthful life you deserve.

On June 1, 2010 we will be offering our acclaimed holistic nutritional healing series. This program is so comprehensive and can facilitate healing on so many levels I wanted to name it, "The World's Best Holistic Nutritional Healing Program Designed To Slim You Down, Rev Your Energy Up, Boost Your Immune System, Overhaul Your Digestive System, Clear Your Mind, Improve Your Mood, and Make You Feel Like a Million Bucks!"

Sadly, the powers that be vetoed this and gave me the look. You know which one I'm talking about... the "keep it simple stupid" look.

All jokes aside, we settled on "Weight Loss For Tired People" but don't be fooled. It's about a lot more than slimming down and getting your energy back.

And best yet.... I can exclusively offer NIHA patients a huge discount the general public will not receive, by giving you LAST YEAR'S prices!!
